Crags – 15th February

Location:

Assembly/Finish/Start located near the col to the south of Hunter’s Bog (///buzz.ladder.quarrel).

Nearest Postcode: EH15 3PY

Terrain:

Salisbury Crags is a famous rocky outcrop located in Holyrood Park. The crags are made of basalt and formed from a volcanic eruption around 350 million years ago. Thousands of years of weathering, erosion and – in the last 500 years – anthropogenic modification have intricately sculpted the crags into a fantastic area for orienteering.

The northern part of the area provides complex contour details; whilst the southern section offers fast running and vague navigation. See below for a map excerpt.

Timings:

The starts are from 19:00-19:45.

There is an optional mass start on the Long course at 19:30.

Courses close at 20:30.

Additional Info:

As usual, there will be no SI boxes at controls. You only need to punch at the start and finish.

Maps will not be printed on waterproof paper. So bring a map bag / polly pocket if you have one, there will be some available at assembly.

The nature of the terrain this week means that orienteering (or fell) shoes are compulsory. It goes without saying that a headtorch is required, and don’t forget your dibber!

EUOC have some spare compasses, dibbers and a few headtorches which you can borrow if needed – just let us know by sending an email to: events.euoc@gmail.com.

The Crags are a popular recreation area and as such there are likely to be numerous people about. As such, please be respectful of members of the public.

The courses have been planned to avoid infringement with the WOC 2024 Embargo. You can find out exactly where the embargo is here.
