Weekly Training

All abilities are welcome from complete beginners to experienced GB athletes. Our weekly training is geared up to improve your navigational skills as well as your physical fitness to get you through tough terrain with ease. Our running sessions are also ideal for anyone training for hill, mountain or long distance running, which many of our members love to do as well.

For the most up to date information and meeting locations, have a look at the weekly post on the EUOC Facebook page.

If you’re keen for the general outline of the week have a look below

Tuesday: Intervals.

During semester 1 this is a longer intervals or threshold running session on the Killing Fields, next to Holyrood Palace. For semester 2 we head onto the hills for some lung busting hill repetitions on the Crags that will leave you on the floor. If you want to get fast, Tuesdays are the ones for you. Meet at 18:00 in front of the Commonwealth pool ready to run and armed with a headtorch (bring your own or borrow a club one) for the darker winter months.

Wednesday: Long run.

Meet ready to run at 14:30, in front of the Commonwealth pool before heading onto the Seat for 60-120 minutes (or however long you’d like) of top notch hill running and some decent chat. APO, TC, Chicken’s Coop, Purko’s Arete and the legendary MFD** – you can have ’em all on one of these endurance boosting sessions.

Thursday: Technical training.

On the weeks when there is no FWTN (our bi-weekly night orienteering series) we have technique sessions. We try and rotate between urban and forest areas so you can improve all aspects of your orienteering. Fancy a some sprint orienteering on the Royal Mile or a mass start on Braids? Meet at DVC at 18:00 (unless otherwise stated in the weekly email or on the EUOC Facebook page) with a head torch and compass ready to run.

Weekends:

We have loads of awesome weekends away during term time, including trips to the Lake District, the Cairngorms and the Moray Coast. These are definitely not to be missed and are often considered one of the best things about our club. In between training / competing there is plenty of time to chill, socialise and eat cake.

When we’re not heading off on a weekend trip, there are usually groups heading out to the Pentland Hills on the outskirts of Edinburgh, down to the coast for a parkrun or something completely different – whatever you want to do, others will too.

Although we don’t have organised sessions on other days there are ALWAYS people around and up for all sorts of training. An easy jog, long hill runs, parkruns, intervals, O-sessions, a cool race you fancy – you name it, someone will do it with you! Just head over to our EUOC Facebook page to see what’s going on, see what is happening on the members group chat, or ask for someone to run with. In the highly unlikely, practically impossible event that you can’t find your fix on there, take a look to see what our friends the Haries (2nd best running club in Edinburgh 😉 ) are doing.

**”What about all those strange acronyms??” I’m afraid you’re going to have to come along to find this out; you won’t forget them that’s for sure. If you’re super keen take a look on Strava for a sneak peak.
