Legend of the Week this week is first year Freya! Not only did she come third at JIRCs individual, she also brought her team to the win in the relay. Last weekend, she represented Great Britain at JEC, finishing the relay as 6th nation! She’s off to JHIs this weekend to represent England!
Name: Freya Tryner
Course: Structural Engineering with Architecture
Where are you from: Sheffield
When/how did you start orienteering: Born and bread from the womb. I went to my first JK when I was two weeks old, from my parents. I didn’t always enjoy orienteering, my family has always done it and I got forced along without much choice.
Best achievement in orienteering: Winning the JK 2025 in Sheffield, Making the JWOC team 2 years in a row, 51st JWOC sprint, (Winning JEC sprint (pending..))
Favourite area: The far end of Culbin that you have to reach by boat, because it is a rare area and a glorious super visible runnable forest.
What is your hot drink of choice for the interview: A latte, because it is Pete’s (dad) favourite drink so I always get one alongside him.
Most memorable moment of orienteering: When James came 2nd at EYOC in Poland 2024, and doing a training event with a IFK Thor in Sweden in Lunsen where you can run straight for miles.
Biggest rival: Lyra because ever since the day that she came up to me and asked if I was better at running or navigation the game was on since W12.
Biggest idol: Grace Molloy because she kept her cool even though she wasn’t going through to the knock out final initially – her resilience after getting back into the final unexpectedly at WC3 this year.
Your most listened to song at the moment: Sir Duke, Stevie Wonder
Go to sweet treat: Chocolate and hazelnut swirl from Kringle in Sheffield
Favourite thing about EUOC: Everyone is super lovely and happy to have a chat with you
If you had a superpower what would it be: Really quick learning because I want to know lots of things and want to speak languages.
Dream sponsor: Red Bull because then I would be a really cool person and I would jump out of planes.
Favourite artist at the moment: Last Shadow
Favorite Edinburgh bus number and why: The 14 because I like the number 14 and it is a fun bus
Pre-race ritual: I don’t have one I prefer to stay chilled but defo a lot of leg swings
Most recent google search: Can I book a free nhs flu vaccine when I am in Scotland – self explanatory
What would you eat if you had one meal for the rest of your life: I would have a bagel – in the morning with honey and banana, at lunch with avocado and egg, for dinner with chilli.
Sprint/Forest: Forest even though I seem to be turning into a sprint specialist recently.
What is your worst orienteering experience: JWOC Mixed Sprint Relay this year as I have never been so hot and it was horrific.
How would you feel if Immy stole half of your cake: I would be fine because I always steal her electrolytes, teas and massage gun. (question from Alex)
