Maps will not be printed on waterproof paper, so if the weather is looking damp, please bring a map bag / polly pocket if you have one. There may be some at assembly.
As always, these events are at night in winter so come prepared: Torches, layers, shoes with grip (if location deems it).
EUOC have some spare compasses, dibbers and a few headtorches which you can borrow if needed – just let us know by sending an email to email.
All Fight With The Night locations are either residential or recreational areas, and therefore there are likely to be other people about. As such, please be respectful of members of the public.
Twist – One-Way Barriers™, Out and Back
Explanation
One-Way Barriers™
The short and long courses will use One-Way Barriers™.
These One-Way Barriers™ will look like arrows drawn with the purple barrier symbol and denote that you are allowed to travel through it in the direction of the arrow but not through it in the opposing direction. You are allowed to run up to the barrier when approaching it from the opposing direction but not cross it. This is explained in the pictures below where green is an acceptable route, red is not.
These barriers will not be marked on the ground, only on the map.
Barriers for the short course and long course are different! So make sure you read your map carefully. The long course has a map flip; barriers are consistent on both sides of the map.

Barriers are always placed on sections of paths/roads that can be travelled along in only two directions and are always bordered by impassable features (building/wall/fence etc.). On occasion, a barrier drawn on the map extends past these impassable features to improve the visibility of the barrier on the map. In these cases, the barrier only applies to the section in between the impassable features – you may cross the barrier in either direction outside these impassable features. This is shown in the picture below, again with green and red arrows.

Out and Back
In addition to one way barriers, the LONG course will be an ‘out and back’. Competitors must run from the start kite to control 1 and then to control 2 and so on up until the final control. At this point, they immediately do the course again but in reverse. There will be no finish on the map – the start is the finish. In the case of the example provided below, you visit controls in this order: {Start,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,Start}.
Due to the One Way Barriers™, the route you take to a control on the ‘out’ may not be permissible on the way ‘back’ and vice versa.
For the SHORT course, the first handful of controls will be the same as the last handful of controls with a loop that you only complete once in the middle. This enables some of the out and back action of the long whilst also visiting more of the area.
Examples:

As always courses short and long courses may be gaffled.
